About
Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland. The exercise challenges YOU to present a compelling oration on your thesis topic and its significance in just three minutes. 3MT develops your academic, presentation, and research communication skills and supports the development of your capacity to effectively explain your research in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.
History
The first 3MT was held at The University of Queensland in 2008 with 160 RHD students competing. Enthusiasm for the 3MT concept grew and its widespread implementation by universities has led to the development of an international competition. The global reach of the competition can be seen by the extent of participation with universities in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Vietnam also hosting local 3MT events.
National Competition in the UK
In the UK, the 3MT national competition final is hosted by Vitae. Prior to this, UK HEIs run their own competitions, in order to put forward one winner per participating Institution for the national semi-finals. Judging
At every level of the competition you will be assessed on: comprehension + content and engagement + communication.
Get Involved
The University of Manchester will be hosting the competition in 2015. Registrations will launch in January. The Heats and Final will be held in March. To register an early interest in this competition, and be the first to know when applications open, email alex.hinchliffe@manchester.ac.uk using the subject ‘3MT.’
