Lunchtime discussion Calling all scientists – what’s it like being you?

Wednesday 24 September 2014, 12.15-2.00pm (sandwiches available from 12.00), Room 3.101, Manchester Business School (West), University of Manchester

  • What motivates scientists and what pressures are they under?
  • What effects are funding and publishing systems having on the production of high quality, ethical scientific research?
  • Are current methods for assessing the quality of science working?
  • Is competition in science a good thing?

Express your views on these and other questions at a discussion event organised by the University of Manchester in collaboration with the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.

The event is part of a nationwide project to gather views and encourage debate about how the different features of the UK research environment are affecting, both positively and negatively, the work and behaviour of scientists at all stages of their career. The findings of the project will be published and presented to policy makers towards the end of 2014. This is your chance to contribute.

Panel:

  • Margaret Brazier (Chair), Professor of Law, University of Manchester
  • Neil Hanley, Professor of Medicine and Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow in Clinical Science, University of Manchester
  • Cay Kielty, Royal Society Wolfson Professor, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester
  • Steve Pettifer, Reader, School of Computer Science, University of Manchester

The event is open to anyone and is free to attend but please register in advance. Register for the event: www.surveymonkey.com/s/sci-culture-Man
